Есть знаковые места на карте города.  Для меня одним из таких мест   всегда был Дворец культуры им. Кирова. 



Он напоминает гигантский корабль – сейчас, к сожалению, похож на севший на мель.   Раньше он словно  рассекал просторы Смоленского поля, теперь и сам весьма потрепан, да и новые высотки плотно окружили и  задавили обилием стекла, бетона и современной эклектики.
Здание было построено в 30-ые годы прошлого столетия (арх. Н.А. Троцкий и С.Н. Козак), и на тот момент стал самым большим в Ленинграде очагом культуры. Заложили его в 1930 г. , первая очередь была сдана в 1935 г. Строительству способствовали массовые воскресники рабочих и служащих Балтийского завода, "Севкабеля", заводов "Красный гвоздильщик", "Пневматика", "Электроаппарат", студентов Университета, Горного института, так что это  можно назвать  народной стройкой. Газета "Ленинградская правда" назвала ее " Днепрострой культурного строительства".



ДК  было построено в стиле конструктивизма с элементами неоклассики. Часть задуманного архитекторами воплотить не удалось (не построили Большой театральный зал и западное крыло). Планировалась также  обсерватория – нигде не могу найти информацию, существовала ли она на самом деле...
Многие с благодарностью вспоминают  кинотеатр Госфильмофонда "Кинематограф" (1967 - середина 1980-х годов).  Только здесь можно было увидеть шедевры мирового кино. Потом эту функцию взял на себя кинотеатр "Спартак".
В 90-ые годы работал Дом национальных культур и многочисленные кружки, секции, курсы. Кое-что из этого еще сохранилось, но бОльшая часть помещений сдана в аренду. Потому здесь  бильярд, мебельный и сувенирный магазины и т.п. Здание меняло собственника, тихо разрушается, хотя все еще "охраняется государством" . 



В здании с 2004 г.снимает помещение  гончарная мастерская.

There’re some significant places on the city map. For me this is first of all Kirov Palace of Culture.
The building resembles a giant ship, nowadays, unfortunately, it’s more like the one that ran aground. It used to as if sail across the altitude of the Smolensky field. But nowadays it’s really worn itself, and all is surrounded and pressed by the new high rises with their plenty of glass, cement and modern eclecticism. The house was built in 1930s (by the architects N. Trotsky and S. Kozak), and then became the biggest cultural centre of Leningrad.
It was laid in 1930, and the first part was finished in 1935. The voskresniks (volunteer work sessions) organized by the workers assisted the building process a lot. There helped the workers from Baltic Factory, ‘Sevkabel” (Northern Cable), “Red Nailer” (“Krasny Gvozdil’shcik”), “Pneumatics”, “Electroapparat” factories, the University and Gorinstitute (Geological institute) students, so, it can be called the common building. It was called “the building of Dnepr of the cultural building” (comparing with the construction of the number of hydroelectric power stations on the Dnepr river in the Ukrainian SSR) by the newspaper “Leningradskaya Pravda” (“Leningrad Truth”).
The Culture Palace has been built in constructivism style with the elements of neoclassicism. There wasn’t realized everything from the architects’ plan (they didn’t build the Big theatre hall and the Western phase). There was also the observatory on the project, but I can’t find anywhere whether it existed or not. Lots of people remember with gratitude the cinema of Gosfilmofond (State Fond of the Films) “Kinematograf” (1967 - mid 1980s). Only here it was possible to see the masterpieces of the world cinema. Later on “Spartak” cinema got the similar function.
In the 1990s there worked the House of National Cultures and numerous clubs, classes, sections. There’s still something left from it, but the most part of the premises is rented. That’s why you can find here the billiards, the furniture and gift shops, etc. The building has changed its owner, is gradually being destroyed, but still “is guarded by the State”. Since 2004 the Pottery workshop is renting the venue in the building.

                    [comment] => Прочитала про дворец Кирова, думаю, а есть ли сейчас в Петербурге что-то, что с полным правом можно назвать "очагом культуры" - таким, каким был этот Дворец культуры в 60-е - 70-е годы для ленинградцев. Сейчас очагов культуры стало больше, но они более специализированные что ли.
