House number 68 on Nevsky Prospect is called the literary house; this is a former Lopatin merchants’ apartment house since 1839.
During the century the house’s owners and functions have changed several times: before the war there was an executive committee of the district council here, during the blockade the central part of the building was destroyed by incendiary bombs and stayed deserted till only after the renovation in 1950 settled here Kuibyshev district executive committee, then, until 2010 the tax inspectorate Central district based here. In February, it was demolished which aroused a big scandal; in 2012 a hotel complex is to be built with a renovated old facade.
During the post-war reconstruction, it was decided to change the facade by making it more statuesque, majestic, and also two sculptures in the style of Stalin's empire were set. There is a legend about the Worker and Collective Farmer. It says that the sculptor Zhuravlev has shaped the images of his wife and himself. Their love affair began during the war, when Nina Bratashina carried him from the battlefield. They met again after the war and never part. So the sculpture got the name the Monument of Love.
