The Badaev storage was burnt down by German air attacks in the first days of the Great Patriotic war. The fire started on the 8th of September and lasted 5 hours. About 3 000 tons of flour (city reserve for 3 days) and 2 500 tons of sugar (city reserve for 1,5 days) was lost. The rest of the stored products were distributed in other city warehouses as became known later. And the officials supported the idea that this fire was the reason of famine occurred in 1941 – 1942 during the Leningrad siege, it was a good explanation to their mistakes in calculating the food supply.
Leningrad citizens came to Kievskaya Street to take the “sweet soil”. It was possible to sell or to swap it along with other products.
In 1945 – 1970 Badaev storages were rebuilt. Now it is planned to build new elite houses on this territory.
