Nice monument! But, it seems to me, actually it’s a water carrier. Water carters used to carry water by horses and water carriers – by means of a yoke or a manual cart like this one in the summer, and in the winter – on sledge. Today it is difficult to imagine how people could do without plumbery, but actually it appeared in houses only in the middle of nineteenth century. By the way, water carriers had barrels of different colors, depending on the withdrawal point. Barrels with water from Neva were white, water from Fontanka river was poured into yellow barrels, and from Moika, Pryazhka and channels - into green. The Neva water was the purest, and, accordingly, the most expensive. And the cheapest was water from channels. I recommend not only to have a look at the monument, but also to visit the Museum of Water housed in a water tower near it. The guide will necessarily tell you some funny stories about why on angry men water is carried (proverb, means: two to one in all things against the angry man), what job do river cancers do in "Water plant" and why enamored cancers are suspended from work. Necessarily visit a multimedia complex and do not forget to admire the most unusual fountain located in a tower. Water in it moves in the closed loop system, therefore the expense of water is very little. Also taste the mineral water from the automatic machine of sparkling water of the Soviet period. Probably, it will make you happy :-)
